Brazil sues Discord for $97 million over alleged failures to protect children

Brazil's government filed a lawsuit against gaming platform Discord on Wednesday, seeking 500 million reais ($97 million) in damages. The alleged reason for the lawsuit is the company's failure to protect children online. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's office stated that the damages are due to alleged collective psychological harm caused by Discord.

The lawsuit, which is 25 pages long, highlights gaps in Discord's age-verification systems and user safety protections. The government's Solicitor-General's office is also demanding that Discord strengthen parental controls, cooperate more with local law enforcement, and use automated tools to detect and remove harmful content. The government is not the first to take legal action against Discord; the company is facing similar lawsuits in the United States.
