Bayern confirm João Palhinha departure to Benfica

Bayern Munich have confirmed the departure of midfielder João Palhinha to Benfica. The 31-year-old Portugal international has signed with the Lisbon club for an initial fee of €14 million, with a potential bonus of an additional €5 million. Palhinha has signed a contract that will keep him at Benfica until 2030.

Palhinha's return to Portugal marks his professional career debut, having started his journey through Sporting CP's academy. Prior to joining Bayern Munich in 2024 from Fulham, Palhinha had made a name for himself in the Premier League, earning the Bundesliga title in his first season with the German club. He made 25 appearances across all competitions during his first year in Germany.

However, Palhinha's opportunities at Bayern became limited, and he spent the previous season on loan at Tottenham Hotspur. This summer, interest from other clubs, including Aston Villa and Newcastle United, reportedly made it a competitive race for his signature. Ultimately, Benfica emerged victorious and has secured the services of the experienced midfielder, bringing him back to his homeland.
