Australian police hunt thieves who stole over 300 bags of oysters, worth A$350,000

Sydney, August 26 - Australian police are actively searching for the individuals responsible for stealing over A$350,000 worth of oysters. The mollusks, valued at approximately RM1.01 million, were taken from an oyster farm located near Taree, situated north of Sydney in New South Wales, according to local authorities. The heist involved over three hundred bags, each containing 400,000 oysters, resulting in the loss of approximately one-third of the farm's stock.

The police have called upon the public to provide any information they may have regarding the incident, which occurred "earlier this year" but was only reported to them on August 25. Oysters are a popular component of Australian brunch menus and seafood buffets, with local varieties prized for their rich and creamy taste. Ryan Freeman, an oyster grower speaking to national broadcaster ABC, expressed concern over the theft, stating that the loss of such a significant portion of his stock would pose a substantial challenge.

"We probably get through 35,000 to 40,000 dozen at Christmas time," Freeman noted, "That’s why the thieves would have targeted them because they’re not going to be far off, they’re going to be able to sell them this Christmas," he added, emphasizing the potential impact on the market.
