The German telecommunications company Deutsche Telekom is transitioning away from traditional landline connections, which will impact those who wish to continue using them. By the end of this process, roughly 1.3 million such connections will be phased out. For those who still desire a non-combined internet and landline telephone connection, Deutsche Telekom will offer an adapter box called "Call Connect via Funk."

This device enables users to make calls over the mobile network by connecting their existing landline phone to it. This solution comes with a monthly fee of about €23 (including 120 free minutes) or around €32 (including a landline flat rate). These prices are significantly cheaper compared to the landline-only "Call Connect via Funk" package, which costs less than €5 per month, according to the comparison website Verivox.

Other mobile carriers already offer mobile tariffs with unlimited calls for approximately the same price (Vodafone and Telefonica networks). This means customers could halve their potential costs by opting for a cheaper Deutsche Telekom mobile tariff instead of the adapter box subscription. The benefits of the "Call Connect via Funk" box include retaining the customer's existing landline number and the option to keep using their familiar landline telephone.

However, customers should not be limited to expensive tariffs; they also have the choice of purchasing the box (either once for around €100 or monthly for about €4). Alternatively, customers who prefer a new mobile number can consider inexpensive smartphones or basic models (starting at €25). For those who cannot or do not want to adapt to a new mobile number, Verivox suggests affordable table phones that look like traditional landline devices but operate on mobile networks via a SIM card.

These devices can be purchased for as little as €70, making them cheaper than the Deutsche Telekom box. When purchasing a new mobile phone with a SIM card, customers should ensure it supports 4G (LTE) and/or 5G network standards, as 2G (GMS) and/or 3G (UMTS) support is no longer sufficient due to the 3G shutdown and the scheduled 2G shutdown in 2028.
