Asian Games chiefs hold talks as participant numbers balloon

TOKYO: Japanese organizers of the Asian Games held regular discussions with their Olympic counterparts following a report that suggested the number of participants had been increased, putting a strain on accommodations. The Games, taking place in Nagoya and the Aichi region from September 19 to October 4, initially anticipated around 15,000 athletes and officials.

However, the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) recently reported a figure of 17,000 – 11,000 athletes and 6,000 officials – which could overwhelm the existing facilities. The lack of a dedicated athletes village has led organizers to use a cruise ship, wooden containers, and hotels for housing. The Kyodo news agency reported that Japan's organizing committee sought the OCA's assistance, but the committee declined to comment on the specifics of their talks.

They stated that they share information with the OCA about the registration status of national teams and discuss necessary arrangements such as accommodations. The OCA has not yet provided a response to AFP's inquiries. Despite the increased numbers, organizers are confident in their plan, relying on temporary accommodations to reduce costs.

The Italian cruise ship Costa Serena, with 571 cabins, will house between 4,000 and 5,000 athletes, while wooden shipping container-style huts in Nagoya and hotels in Tokyo will accommodate the remaining athletes.
