Anwar warns against complacency, urges faster reforms

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim cautioned against complacency, urging faster reforms for the nation's advancement. He explained that an attitude of contentment could lead to the acceptance of weaknesses, outdated methods, and underlying issues. Anwar stated that complacency in managing the country, organizations, or society should not become a norm.

He emphasized that the country's growth necessitates a dedication to reform, enhanced efficiency, and a pursuit for excellence, rather than settling for existing achievements.

According to Anwar, good governance should be ensured, and progress should accelerate beyond the norm. The changes required extend beyond merely implementing new technologies; they also encompass work culture, thought processes, and approaches to fulfilling responsibilities. He stressed the importance of exposing the current generation to new knowledge, disciplines, and developments to keep up with the rapidly evolving global landscape.

Anwar highlighted that Malaysia possesses significant potential for ongoing advancement, but this potential can only be realized if everyone commits to achieving more than what has been accomplished previously. He noted that while the achievements may be impressive, a country risks becoming weak and falling behind if it cultivates a culture of complacency.

He urged organizations to consistently evaluate their weaknesses, pinpoint areas for improvement, strengthen governance, and expedite service delivery. Anwar criticized the mentality that a loss of RM10 billion or RM12 billion is acceptable, questioning the rationale behind this complacency. He argued that such a culture will not make society comfortable but will lead to financial losses. Therefore, determination is crucial, he said.

Moreover, Anwar stressed the importance of continuous pursuit of excellence as progress would not be feasible if society and institutions opted to adhere to outdated practices. He emphasized the significance of good governance as the foundation for accelerating the nation's progress. Malaysia must move dynamically in line with changing times, including in areas such as information technology, digital technology, artificial intelligence, and emerging fields that were once beyond societal imagination, said Anwar.

The spirit of improving the status quo and rejecting complacency must be carried forward by the current generation to ensure Malaysia remains sovereign, progressive, and successful.
