Anwar hails TM’s 80-year role in expanding connectivity, calls for shared prosperity

On August 26, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim honored Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) for its 80-year contribution to nation-building by marking its anniversary celebration. Anwar highlighted how TM evolved from its pre-independence era to become a vital force for connectivity and digital advancement in the present day. "Independence goes beyond swapping English officers with Malay officers or extracting wealth for the elite," Anwar stated.

"It's about sharing prosperity with the people." He emphasized that TM has consistently provided essential services and adapted to meet the nation's changing needs, contributing to shared prosperity throughout its history. Anwar also discussed the company's privatization in the 1990s, acknowledging its benefits for corporate efficiency and profits while stressing the importance of balancing financial performance with social responsibility.

He urged TM and other government-linked companies to prioritize worker welfare, wage increases, and quality housing and education for employees' families, aligning with Malaysia's "Madani" policy framework. Anwar emphasized TM's ongoing significance in Malaysia's technological future, including artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies.

He urged the government to harness TM's capabilities to deploy next-generation internet-based services and infrastructure, stressing that technological progress and economic growth should ultimately benefit all Malaysians.
