Alex Eala gets stunning mural at iconic Manila basketball court

Alex Eala's soaring popularity reached new heights as his likeness was painted onto the iconic Tenement Basketball Court in Taguig City, Philippines. Photographer and visual artist Mike Swift captured the transformation of the court through videos shared on social media, showcasing a powerful mural dedicated to the 21-year-old tennis sensation. The artwork was unveiled just a day after Eala broke into the WTA top 20, marking a significant milestone in her career.

The Tenement Court is well-known for its murals honoring basketball legends like Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, and Filipino-American star Jordan Clarkson. However, this time, artists chose to celebrate Eala for her exceptional achievements in tennis and for elevating the Philippines' standing in the sport on a global stage. Adrian Pinon, one of the artists and a local resident, explained that Eala's accomplishments were the inspiration behind the mural, stating, "Alex Eala inspired us... She is one of the first Filipinos we've seen making such a significant impact in tennis."

The mural pays tribute to a pivotal moment in Eala's career—the moment she clinched her first WTA title at the Mubadala DC Open, defeating World No. 3 Jessica Pegula in the final. Pinon chose a photograph that captured Eala's determination and fierce play, remarking, "We chose that particular photo because you can see how fearless she is when she plays tennis. It looked like her winning shot."

Surprisingly, the mural was completed in a mere four to five days, with the artists racing against time to finish it before Eala's next scheduled appearance on August 30. Pinon expressed his hope that the mural would inspire young children in the community to take up tennis and dream bigger, saying, "If the children see Alex as a Filipino tennis player, I believe many of them will be inspired by the mural we created."

As images and videos of the mural continue to circulate on social media, the artists remain hopeful that Eala's success story will continue to inspire the next generation. Pinon expressed his wish for Eala to visit the mural one day and see their tribute firsthand, adding, "We hope she continues winning in tennis. Maybe she can visit us here one day and see the mural we made for her."
