Agreement inked to expand, modernise KP’s railway network

In a significant development for Pakistan Railways, the federal government and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province signed a framework agreement on Tuesday to collaborate on expanding and modernising the province's railway network. The agreement was witnessed by KP Chief Minister Sohail Afridi and Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi.

The accord focuses on upgrading approximately 240km of suburban railway lines in KP, including routes such as Peshawar Nowshera Jahangira, Nowshera Mardan Dargai, Nowshera Mardan Charsadda, Nasirpur (Chamkani) Jamrud, and Jamrud Landi Kotal Safari Railway. The Prime Minister's vision of modernising Pakistan Railways will be brought to life through this partnership, according to Abbasi.

The KP Chief Minister expressed his gratitude to the federal government for the collaborative approach, highlighting the significance of this framework agreement in strengthening ties between the Centre and the province. He emphasized that the agreement marked a pivotal step towards enhanced federal-provincial cooperation and a new era of development, rehabilitation, and modernisation for Pakistan Railways.

Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi outlined the benefits of the agreement, stating that it would improve connectivity, modernise passenger facilities, and make daily commuting easier for people across KP. He also announced that the 192km strategic railway line from Kohat through Thall to Kharlachi would be constructed as part of the agreement, further promoting regional connectivity and trade with Central Asian states.

Abbasi underscored that Peshawar Cantonment, Peshawar City, Nowshera, and Jahangira railway stations would receive upgrades, featuring enhanced passenger amenities, cleanliness, and security. He emphasized railway safety as a top priority, urging the KP government to collaborate in transforming unsafe unmanned level crossings into regulated crossings.

The minister highlighted the commitment of Punjab, Sindh, and Balochistan provinces, which are currently contributing to various railway projects, and encouraged KP to further strengthen its partnership with Pakistan Railways. He concluded by reiterating the shared goal of making the railway system more efficient, safe, and modern, thus delivering better travel experiences for the public.
