Australia intensifies its prison-building efforts, with ACS taking the lead on a $730 million project to expand the Townsville correctional center. Facing a surge in inmates, authorities across Queensland have been pursuing various plans to upgrade existing facilities and increase capacity. Queensland's ambitious prison-building plans have been ongoing since 2023, leading to ACS being awarded the contract to renovate and expand the Townsville facility.

The project, which is expected to cost around $1 billion, will see CPB Contractors handling the construction work, with a budget of approximately $730 million. The expanded prison will feature 400 new cells, bringing the total capacity to around 1,700, potentially raising it even higher depending on how the facilities are distributed and brought into service.

This new prison will also include new medical attention centers, laundry rooms, dining areas for staff, and cooking facilities, along with remodels to storage areas and enhanced electronic security to prevent smuggling from outside the prison. The prison capacity crisis is a priority for the current Queensland government, with 12 of the 13 high-security prisons already operating above their intended capacity, straining facilities, personnel, and rehabilitation programs.
