A Montana man killed 8 relatives, including 4 kids, at Sunday dinner

In Billings, Montana, a horrific incident unfolded on Sunday evening when 44-year-old Alan Smith fatally shot eight members of his blended family, including four children, during a family dinner at his parents' home. The victims spanned four generations, from a great-grandmother in her 90s to a 7-year-old girl. Smith's ex-wife, Megan Ghekiere, and their two children, 13-year-old Owen Ireland and 7-year-old Chloe Ireland, were among the deceased.

Additionally, Ghekiere's two step-children, 15-year-old Landon Ghekiere and 12-year-old Charlotte Ghekiere, lost their lives.

The shooter, who had previously been asked to move out by his parents just weeks ago, returned unexpectedly on Sunday evening during the family gathering. According to Brad Ireland, Smith opened fire, killing his grandmother, parents, younger sister, and four children before setting the house ablaze. He attempted to flee, but was confronted by law enforcement.

Neighbors reported hearing gunshots earlier in the evening, and a search of criminal records found no prior arrests or charges against Smith. He had attended Eastern Washington University but struggled to find or maintain employment.
