56.4% of Ghanaians remain in poverty despite economic recovery – World Bank

Despite Ghana's recent economic recovery, *56.4% of Ghanaians still live in poverty*, according to the World Bank. The organization's Division Director for Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, Robert R. Taliercio, highlighted the disparity in living conditions during the launch of the *Tenth Ghana Economic Update* in Accra. Mr. Taliercio emphasized that the strong headline economic growth in recent years has not yet resulted in improved living standards for many of the population.

He pointed out the widening spatial disparities, indicating a disconnect between the country's headline economic growth and the actual experiences of many households. The World Bank official stressed the need for more inclusive growth that generates job opportunities for the broader population. He noted that Ghana's *6% economic growth in 2025* and *6.4% in the first quarter of 2026* is promising, but growth must be more evenly distributed to address the development challenges.

Mr. Taliercio warned that the economy's reliance on sectors with limited employment creation could hinder the nation's progress. He urged the implementation of policies that foster job creation, enhance productivity, and ensure that the rewards of economic growth trickle down to more households and regions. He emphasized that for Ghana to sustain its macroeconomic gains, the recovery must be inclusive, job-intensive, and resilient.
