341 foreign tourists missing after flash flood kills at least 95 on Nepal-Tibet border

A massive wall of mud and rock gave way along the Nepal-Tibet border, causing catastrophic floods that have left at least 95 people dead and hundreds missing, officials reported. The disaster, still unfolding, has devastated homes, roads, and power projects in Nepal, with authorities on both sides fearing higher casualties and massive destruction.

Security footage captured on the Chinese side shows people fleeing as a torrent of rock, mud, and water destroys buildings and vehicles. Heavy rains have prompted flood alerts in northern Indian states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, which rely on rivers flowing from the mountains down into the plains. Over 300 foreign travelers, including over 100 Indians and 12 British nationals, are among those missing.

Rescue efforts in Nepal have recovered 95 bodies so far, with at least 65 people hospitalized in the area and in Kathmandu. The exact cause of the mudslide remains under investigation, but a 4.4 magnitude earthquake approximately seven minutes before the event may have triggered the debris-laden flood, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences.

Local media reports indicate that 65 people are being treated for injuries in hospitals, with fears of a second flood due to a blockage upstream on the Nepal-China border river.
