Zoomlion begins eight-day disinfection exercise across 22 assemblies in Central Region

Zoomlion Company Limited commenced an eight-day disinfection and pest-control campaign across 22 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the Central Region on Thursday, August 20, 2026. The initiative, undertaken in coordination with the Central Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) and the respective assemblies, targets public facilities such as schools, markets, healthcare centers, public toilets, and other high-traffic areas.

The exercise was prompted by recent flooding that contaminated public spaces and increased the risk of water-borne and vector-borne diseases.

The operation kicked off in Cape Coast at the Kwamena Walker Avenue public toilet and expanded to refuse container sites, dump sites, school libraries, and other public spaces in the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem Municipality and the Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese District. A 10-member spraying team, featuring two female operatives, executed the disinfection process at Cape Coast before proceeding to the other locations.

Central Regional Manager Noah Addo Opey clarified that the primary objective of the intervention is to mitigate health risks stemming from post-flood contamination and safeguard public health during the ongoing clean-up and recovery efforts. The disinfection process aims to eliminate contaminants, curb the spread of pathogens, and minimize the incidence of diarrheal, respiratory, and vector-borne diseases like malaria and cholera.

Opey urged residents to uphold hygiene standards, remove standing water, dispose of waste appropriately, maintain cleanliness in public toilets, and ensure food vendors at markets cover their offerings. He also appealed for community cooperation with the spraying teams to guarantee the exercise's success.

Representing the Central Regional Minister, Regional Environmental Officer William Goku affirmed the RCC's backing for the disinfection exercise, emphasizing its role in preventing post-flood disease outbreaks. He encouraged residents to actively engage in the initiative, maintain personal hygiene practices, and collaborate with local authorities to curb disease transmission.

Assemblyman James Arthur from Pedu-Abakadze in Cape Coast North commended the initiative, noting its timeliness in light of the floods' impact on homes and public areas. Arthur urged residents to adhere to the assembly’s sanitation guidelines and provide support to Zoomlion’s teams throughout the eight-day program.
