Youth participation in politics must go beyond partisanship – Osman Ayariga

Osman Abdulai Ayariga, CEO of the National Youth Authority (NYA), has called for young people to engage more actively in political discussions, emphasizing that their involvement should be centered on citizenship and national progress, rather than being confined to partisan politics. Ayariga stressed that meaningful participation involves equipping young people with the ability to scrutinize policies that impact education, job opportunities, businesses, communities, and the environment.

He urged young individuals to possess the confidence to question government decisions, offer respectful challenges to policies, propose alternatives, and hold public institutions accountable. Ayariga clarified that democratic participation entails both rights and responsibilities. He highlighted that discussing youth involvement in politics does not inherently mean partisan politics; it signifies promoting citizenship.

Ayariga cautioned young people against limiting their civic engagement to mere online debates and partisan interactions. Instead, he encouraged them to apply their ideas and concerns within their communities, educational institutions, workplaces, youth organizations, and established democratic structures. He underscored that the significance of youth participation hinges on the depth and constructiveness of their views.

Ayariga concluded that "your voice carries weight when it is informed, constructive, and solution-oriented."
