Why Kimi Antonelli is taking a F1 grid penalty at Italian Grand Prix

Kimi Antonelli, the current F1 championship leader, will face a grid penalty at the Italian Grand Prix for utilizing a brand-new power unit. This decision comes as the Mercedes star attempts to secure his first title and currently boasts a 59-point advantage over teammate George Russell and Lewis Hamilton. However, recent reliability issues have prompted Mercedes to implement drastic measures to prevent further complications in their title chase.

The penalty is partly a cost-saving measure, as each driver is restricted to a specific number of power unit components throughout the season. Additionally, Mercedes believes the timing of the penalty may provide an advantage at the 6th September race, despite the circuit's characteristics suggesting otherwise. Team principal Toto Wolff explained that the decision was based on calculations indicating that this particular track was the optimal choice for granting rivals an edge.

While the penalty will likely result in Antonelli starting from the back of the grid, the primary focus will be on minimizing damage to Russell, Hamilton, and the resurgence of Lando Norris, who has secured two consecutive victories. Nevertheless, Antonelli remains optimistic about his chances at home, stating that the penalty still presents an opportunity to earn significant points for the team.
