Why Have Onion Prices Crossed ₹60 Per Kg, Here’s What Is Driving The Sudden Surge

Mumbai: The cost of onions has surged dramatically across India, with retail prices surpassing Rs 60 per kg in numerous major cities. This sudden price increase is straining household budgets and creating significant concerns. Unseasonal Rains Hit Maharashtra's Onion Crop Maharashtra experienced unseasonal rains and hailstorms in March and April, which inflicted severe damage to the late Rabi onion crop.

As one of India's largest onion-producing states, Maharashtra plays a vital role in supplying onions nationwide. The adverse weather not only diminished the overall quantity of the crop but also compromised its quality and storage life, with a significant portion of the harvested onions deteriorating earlier than anticipated. Stored Stocks Failing to Keep Pace India's economy relies heavily on Rabi onions harvested between March and April to meet demand until the following major crop arrives around October.

However, the significant damage to the stored crop has led to a rapid depletion of stocks. Consequently, lower arrivals in wholesale markets have amplified price surges across the supply chain. Onion Prices Spike 40% in Just One Week Reports indicate that onion prices have jumped up by as much as 40% within a week, with the latest rates soaring across major cities.

Supply concerns have further intensified due to forecasts suggesting that Maharashtra's Kharif onion production may fall by 5% to 7%. Should this decline occur, it could impede any progress towards alleviating the current price surge, particularly if limited or disrupted crop arrivals persist. Festive Demand Fuels Price Surge Onion prices typically rise during August and September as market arrivals dwindle, coinciding with heightened household and commercial demand ahead of the festive season.

The confluence of reduced availability and heightened consumption has further fueled the ongoing price escalation. Government Takes Steps to Curb Prices In an effort to mitigate the price surge, the central government has begun releasing onions from its buffer stocks into key consumption markets. Additionally, dedicated freight trains, known as the Kanda Express, have been deployed to transport bulk onion supplies directly from Nashik to high-demand urban centers.

These measures are anticipated to enhance availability, minimize transportation delays, and provide some respite to consumers in the forthcoming days.
