VyomIC is building a satellite constellation to replace GPS when losing signal isn’t an option

VyomIC, a startup founded in Bengaluru in 2023 by Lokesh Kabdal, Vibhor Jain, and Anurag Patil, is set to revolutionize satellite positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) with its low Earth orbit constellation. The company aims to provide a more robust and accurate alternative to GPS, which is essential for autonomous systems that require precise location data.

The founders of VyomIC, all former IIT Madras students, recognized the limitations of existing satellite navigation systems during their work on Avishkar Hyperloop and their drone swarm deployments for government users. GPS, while providing position to within five to ten metres, is inadequate for applications that demand centimetre-level accuracy, such as drone landings or navigating through cluttered environments.

VyomIC plans to address these shortcomings by launching a constellation of satellites in low Earth orbit, closer to the Earth's surface. This strategic choice allows for a stronger satellite signal, making it harder to jam or interfere with. Additionally, the company's atomic clocks, encrypted signals, and AI-based processing aim to deliver centimetre-level accuracy, surpassing the current standards set by GPS.

VyomIC's technology is designed to cater to a wide range of industries, including drone operations, unmanned ground vehicles, mining machinery, urban air mobility, finance, and telecommunications. These sectors rely on precise timing, which is significantly enhanced by VyomIC's innovative approach to satellite navigation. By reducing reliance on foreign constellations and minimizing vulnerability to jamming or spoofing, VyomIC offers a reliable and secure solution for critical applications.
