US spy chief visits Russia for meetings, media reports

U.S. Central Intelligence Agency Director John Ratcliffe journeyed to Moscow on Tuesday for discussions with Russian officials, according to U.S. news sources. This marks the first documented visit to the Russian capital by a U.S. spy chief since Ratcliffe's predecessor, William Burns, conversed with Vladimir Putin in November 2021. Three months later, Putin initiated Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The Reuters-affiliated outlets CBS News and Axios reported Ratcliffe's visit, although they did not disclose the identities of his counterparts or the subjects of their discussions. The CIA refrained from offering a comment, while the Kremlin did not provide a response to a request for information.

In late July, the United States had requested Ukraine to refrain from launching airstrikes near Moscow, St. Petersburg, and certain northern Russian regions during the week of August 23-27, as a senior U.S. official's aircraft was scheduled to arrive in the Russian capital, a source close to the situation revealed. The source, who wished to remain anonymous, did not offer additional details. The Financial Times was the first to report the U.S. communication to Ukraine.

On Monday, the U.S. cautioned nations to sever commercial relations with Iran or face secondary sanctions, a measure intended to intensify economic pressure on Tehran following the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran initiated in February. The U.S. does not possess an embassy in Russia, which maintains a robust strategic alliance with Iran encompassing significant military, economic, and diplomatic cooperation.

Iran furnished Moscow with drones for its conflict against Ukraine. In March, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy alleged Russia's provision of its version of those drones to Iran.

A Ukrainian intelligence assessment cited by Reuters in April indicated that Russia had assisted Iran with satellite imagery for targeting U.S. facilities in the Middle East. Russia denies such support and has expressed readiness to contribute to resolving the U.S.-Iran dispute.
