Turning Nairobi waste challenge into potential economic opportunity

Nairobi County and Zoomlion Kenya have teamed up to turn the city's waste problem into a chance for economic growth. The collaboration focuses on turning waste into valuable resources, such as fertiliser and plastic products, while reducing illegal dumping. The initiative will set up a large recycling facility in Ruai, where collected waste will be sorted and processed into organic compost and fertiliser.

Plastic waste will be transformed into panels for waste bins, encouraging responsible disposal. This cleaner environment has already benefited Korogocho market, with residents reporting fewer health risks and more customers. The partnership has led to the closure of five illegal dumping sites, and the County government is pleased with the progress.

Zoomlion's Operations Manager, Laud Mike Tagoe, promises a cleaner Nairobi as the project expands. The Ruai plant is expected to create more jobs and establish a larger market for recycled materials, ultimately changing the region's perspective on waste management.
