Turkey won’t abandon Syria or let Israel draw ‘red lines’, Erdogan says

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has firmly stated that his country will not abandon Syria or allow Israel to set boundaries for Turkish foreign policy. This comes in response to Israeli strikes on a Syrian military base last week. The Israeli Defense Forces claimed that Ankara was preparing to deploy air defense systems at the Abu al-Duhur base, but Turkish and Syrian officials denied this, stating that the personnel were only there to repair the runway and control tower.

Erdogan, who had been on vacation, addressed the situation in Ahlat, eastern Bitlis province. He made it clear that Turkey would not allow politically "moribund, presumptuous incompetents" to use the nation as a tool for their rhetoric. Erdogan emphasized that Turkey would never abandon a friend, and that the nation would continue to support its neighbors in getting back on their feet, regardless of the unsettled feelings of "murderous networks with the blood of innocent people on their hands."

The United States, Turkey's NATO ally, has expressed concern over the escalating tensions and has called for a trilateral mechanism to prevent further friction. Israeli officials, however, believe that Turkey is pursuing a hidden agenda against Israel in the region, possibly supporting Syria's new government to eventually use it against Israel.

In a separate development, Turkey's Ministry of Justice has requested Interpol to issue Red Notices for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and another Israeli official on genocide charges. This request stems from Israel's attack on activists aboard the Global Sumud Flotilla, which set sail to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza.
