TT sidecar racing 'fighting for its future'

Sidecar racing is currently fighting for its future at the Isle of Man TT, after the class was suspended due to safety concerns in June. A sustainability review is underway, with early findings suggesting the class could return in 2027 after major reforms. Sidecar racing legends are keen to see the class return, but feel the sport needs to become safer and more affordable.

John Stephenson, a 71-year-old sidecar rider, believes the TT is now the biggest event the class has left, attracting more interest and spectators than often given credit for. Derek Brindley, who raced the TT at 19 on an apprentice's wage, calls sidecars an integral part of the event, but acknowledges the expense of competing has spiraled.

Alan Cavey and Leila Williams, who rode a 1963 Triumph Bonneville 750 in the parade, say the sidecars' pull for spectators should not be underestimated, and that losing them would be a huge step backwards. Rob and Dafne de Jong, who have been racing together for eight years, believe the class brings 200% passion from its competitors and bring something special to the TT that cannot be underestimated.

A final decision on the future of sidecar racing at the TT is yet to be made, with organizers aiming to confirm it during the autumn.
