Top Doubles Players Eliminated Early in Revamped US Open Mixed Doubles

Two of the world's top doubles players, Elina Svitolina and Gael Monfils, were eliminated early from the revamped US Open mixed doubles tournament. They lost in the quarterfinals to Kateřina Siniaková and Henry Patten, both singles players. Svitolina and Monfils, who are married, had not expected to advance to the semifinals given their limited preparation.

Siniaková and Patten weren't the only doubles specialists to be knocked out, as two-time defending champions Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori also lost in the Round of 16. The US Open mixed doubles format has been changed to attract more singles stars and increase fan interest. Sets are now played to four games instead of six, and there is no deuce point. The prize money has also been increased to $1 million.
