Top 10 African countries with the highest inflation rates as of July 2026

Africa continues to experience high inflation rates, with Sudan registering the highest rate at 41.61% in July 2026, according to the latest consumer price index (CPI) reports from national statistical agencies and central banks. Nigeria follows at third place with an inflation rate of 15.43% despite some easing in price pressures.

South Sudan, which was included in the previous list, has been excluded as its latest inflation data remains at May 2025. Botswana saw a decline in its inflation rate to 9.40% from 10.70% in June, mainly due to lower domestic fuel prices introduced on July 7.

São Tomé and Príncipe recorded an inflation rate of 9.70% in June, up from 9.20% in the previous month. Libya's inflation rate eased to 12.70% in June from 14.00% in May. Egypt's annual headline inflation rate accelerated to 13.00% in July, up from 12.20% in June, driven by rising housing, transport, and education costs.

Rwanda's inflation rate climbed to 14.50% in July from 13.60% in June, driven by increased prices in transport, housing, and food categories. Sierra Leone's inflation rate rose to 14.77% in June from 12.69% in May, mainly due to non-food prices.

Ethiopia's inflation rate rose to 15.30% in July from 13.90% in June, with food inflation reaching 15.7% and non-food inflation at 14.8%. Nigeria saw a slight easing in its inflation rate to 15.43% in July from 15.91% in June, but food prices continued to cause pressure.

Malawi recorded the highest inflation rate in July 2026 at 20.80%, down from 21.10% in June. Sudan had the highest inflation rate of 41.61% in July, a significant decline from 51.28% in June, although urban inflation stood at 45.24% and rural inflation at 39.85%. Five of the ten countries reviewed saw a moderation in inflation rates, while five saw an increase.
