Tomic's main draw drought continues as Australians struggle at US Open

Bernard Tomic's quest to regain a main draw at a Grand Slam tournament continues to be a struggle for the Australian tennis player. On Tuesday afternoon in New York, Tomic faced a loss to Lloyd Harris in the first round of US Open qualifiers, falling 6-2, 5-7, 6-2. This marks the latest in a series of defeats for Tomic, who has failed to break into a main draw of a major in the five years since his impressive run at the 2021 Australian Open.

The 33-year-old, currently ranked 179 in the world, has entered 10 qualifying events for Grand Slams over the past five years without success. Other Australians also suffered setbacks in the first-round action, with Emerson Jones and Alex Bolt both falling to their respective opponents. The US Open main draw begins on August 30 at Flushing Meadows in New York, and as of now, Australia remains without a winner in the qualifying rounds.
