Tom Barrack back in the spotlight after Golan Heights comments

Tom Barrack, the United States special envoy for Syria and ambassador to Turkey, is drawing renewed attention for remarks he made about Israel's control of the Golan Heights. In a recent podcast interview, Mr. Barrack stated that Israel still occupies the Golan Heights, contradicting United Nations resolutions and international consensus which designate the territory as Syrian. This stance diverges from the administration of former President Donald Trump, who had acknowledged Israeli sovereignty over the strategic area.

Republican Senator Rick Scott expressed concern, suggesting Barrack either erred in his knowledge or failed to conduct proper research. The Senate confirmed Mr. Barrack's appointment to execute the President's agenda, which was supported by a majority of American voters. However, Mr. Barrack has since sought to clarify his comments, stating that US policy on the Golan Heights remains consistent with President Trump's 2019 position.

He explained his comments as an attempt to justify Israel's actions in southern Lebanon and advocate for negotiated settlements over territorial conquests.

Critics, including conservative activist Laura Loomer, argue that Barrack's comments have led to calls for consultations with Washington. The State Department has not provided a comment. Additionally, Barrack is under scrutiny for suggesting that Israel might have provoked a confrontation with Turkey ahead of elections, an action that occurred when Israel attacked a military airfield in eastern Idlib despite diplomatic communications through a back channel.

Richard Grenell, the special presidential envoy for special missions, defended Barrack, stating he is fulfilling his role as directed.

Barrack's previous comments have also sparked controversy. Last year, he cautioned journalists against becoming "animalistic" during a media briefing, threatening to leave if they failed to "act civilly." In December, he advocated for a monarchic system in the Middle East over democracy, arguing that the West should not impose its governance preferences on Syria post-Assad.

In July 2025, he warned that Lebanon might revert to its historical status as Bilad Al Sham, a region that could potentially become a vassal state to Syria. Former officials from the Trump administration have criticized Barrack's remarks, noting they contradict the President's official position on the Golan Heights.
