Tigers bring horror show back home, lose sixth game in a row

The Detroit Tigers suffered another defeat on Monday, April 24, as they were swept in a three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays at Comerica Park. This loss marked the team's sixth consecutive defeat and ninth out of their last ten games. In the opening game, the Rays capitalized early, taking an early 3-0 lead. Framber Valdez, the Tigers' starter, struggled immediately, as Yandy Diaz and Ryan Vilade reached base on sharp singles, scoring on groundouts.

The Rays extended their advantage in the fourth inning when Jorge Mateo led off with a double, was bunted over to third, and then advanced on a squeeze bunt by Chandler Simpson. Kevin McGonigle, the Tigers' rookie, contributed as he hit his 138th career hit, tying him with Lou Whitaker and Nick Castellanos for the eighth most in a rookie season in franchise history.

However, the Rays responded with a leadoff home run by Aranda, his 16th of the season, which brought boos from the crowd of 23,265. Valdez, who had never gone a start without a strikeout before, allowed four runs on eight hits in six innings, marking his first game without a strikeout as a Tiger. The Tigers' defense also struggled, with McGonigle making numerous defensive plays, including a notable dive-and-throw in the second inning.

The Tigers, wearing their Motor City Connect jerseys, had limited success at the plate, breaking an 0-for-25 slump with Spencer Torkelson's leadoff double in the eighth inning. Despite a strong performance from Rays starter Drew Rasmussen, who struck out five batters and walked none, the Tigers' inability to score more than a single run in their last six games has been a significant concern.

The Tigers currently trail behind the Chicago White Sox by seven games in the American League Central and 3.5 games behind the final AL wild-card spot. With only 31 games remaining in the regular season, the Tigers face a challenging playoff race ahead.
