Tierra del Fuego condemns Milei government over UK ship’s presence in port

Tierra del Fuego province harshly denounced the British oil tanker VS Promise's docking at the Ushuaia port on Monday, following its authorization by the national government. The provincial capital's port was seized by the national government's Ports and Navigation National Agency in January, leaving the province without control over the facility.

The Tierra del Fuego government vehemently questioned the legitimacy of the takeover, having "questioned the legality" of the move itself. The province's statement condemned the ship's presence due to the UK's "illegal occupation" of the Malvinas Islands, which lie within the province's territory. Tierra del Fuego, Antarctica, and the South Atlantic Islands is the full provincial name.

The government vehemently rejected the ship's presence at the Ushuaia port, asserting it was unacceptable while the UK maintains its occupation of key territories belonging to Tierra del Fuego. The provincial government emphasized that the incident is worsened by the national authorities justifying the port takeover in January due to strategic and sovereignty concerns in the South Atlantic.

The Ushuaia port's seizure was justified on grounds of sovereignty, the provincial statement explained, adding that decisions made regarding the port cannot overlook its strategic location and geopolitical significance. The local government demanded national authorities clarify the political, strategic, and administrative reasons behind permitting the British vessel to dock, given the UK's illegal occupation of the province's territory.
