The Detroit News high school football preview: Top 5 story lines for this season

1. Will Brogan surpass Herrington as the state's all-time winningest coach? In his 47th season, Brogan has 432 career wins, 11 behind Herrington, the former Farmington Hills Harrison head coach. Lumen Christi, under Brogan, won 11-3 last season, adding to its state record 15 championships. If they repeat that, Brogan could break Herrington's record at the same time as winning a state title at Ford Field.

2. The KLAA's final season will be memorable. After this year, the association ends, with 12 schools moving to the Southeastern Conference and the remaining two, Novi and Northville, joining the Oakland Activities Association. Howell, led by senior Bryce Kish and committed to Clemson, is expected to win the Gold Division. Northville is predicted to secure the Black Division title. Other teams anticipate strong performances as well.

3. New teams will impact the OAA and Lakes Valley Conference. Livonia schools previously in the KLAA have moved to the OAA, while Farmington schools transferred from the OAA to the OAA. This year, the OAA welcomed Waterford Mott and Waterford Kettering, displacing Harper Woods and Birmingham Groves in the White Division. Mott and Kettering will compete in the Gold and Blue divisions, respectively.

4. The Catholic League could be even more dominant. Last season, Detroit Catholic Central and Orchard Lake St. Mary’s won the Division 1 and Division 2 titles, respectively. Dearborn Divine Child, defending its Division 4 title, and Lumen Christi, the gold standard in Division 6, will challenge for more championships. Birmingham Brother Rice may have the best team since the Fracassa era, and Warren De La Salle could strengthen after reaching the Division 3 state semifinals.

New power Allen Park Cabrini, with return star quarterback Evan Bergdoll, will be a team to watch in Division 8.
