Tesla just killed Solar Roof after years of complaints and price hikes

Tesla has halted orders for its Solar Roof product, marking the end of its ambitious attempt to offer solar shingles as an alternative to traditional rooftop panels. The decision comes after years of high costs, complicated installations, and customer dissatisfaction. The company informed its certified installers that Solar Roof is no longer available for new projects, with the web address now redirecting visitors to its solar panel offerings.

Tesla's Solar Roof utilized glass tiles designed to generate electricity while functioning as roofing material, making the system significantly more complex than conventional solar arrays installed above existing roofs. The additional expense posed a major challenge, as the specialized equipment required for tile production and installation contributed to the product's unprofitability.

Despite being marketed as a sleeker option for homeowners seeking a more aesthetically pleasing solar solution, demand for Solar Roof was insufficient to justify its manufacturing costs.

Customers reported various issues following Solar Roof installations, including lengthy repair wait times, high service costs, and concerns about temperature management. Some customers also complained about significant pricing increases after signing contracts, leading to a class-action lawsuit that Tesla settled in 2023. While the company has not announced plans to cease supporting homes with existing Solar Roof systems, the end of new sales means Tesla will no longer add to the product's customer base.

The company's decision to withdraw from the Solar Roof market shifts focus back to conventional rooftop panels and battery storage solutions, such as the Powerwall. These products benefit from established supply chains and installation methods, avoiding the need to replace a home's roof with specialized photovoltaic tiles. Although a solar shingle market still exists with offerings from companies like GAF and Merlin Solar, Tesla's exit removes a prominent player in a market segment that has struggled to gain significant traction in the residential solar industry.
