Supreme Court sides with Trump on mail-in voting, making way for more legal challenges

Ghana's Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has referred three Supreme Court nominees nominated by President John Mahama to the Appointments Committee for consideration and report. The three nominees are Justice Sophia Rosetta Bernasko-Essah and Justice Edward Amoako Asante, both from the Court of Appeal, and Mr Anthony Forson Jr., who is a former President of the Ghana Bar Association.

Speaker Bagbin made this announcement during the House's emergency sitting on Monday, August 24, 2026, following its recall from recess. The nominations followed the constitutional process which involved first submitting the nominees' names to the Judicial Council for consideration, which then advised the President that the nominees were suitable for appointment.

The President then submitted the nominations, along with the candidates' curricula vitae, to the Council of State for consideration. The Council of State found the nominees qualified and suitable, and recommended their appointment to the President. President Mahama subsequently submitted the three nominations to Parliament for approval, in line with Article 144(2) of the 1992 Constitution.

Speaker Bagbin formally referred the nominees to Parliament's Appointments Committee for further scrutiny. The Appointments Committee will now scrutinize the nominees' qualifications and suitability before reporting its findings and recommendations to the full House, following which the three nominees will be subjected to the parliamentary approval process.
