Stock Market Rout Sends Korea Consumer Sentiment Lower After Three-Month Rise

South Korean consumer confidence dropped in August after the stock market experienced significant volatility and rising prices. Despite strong economic activity, particularly in semiconductor exports, the stock market decline impacted household finances and economic expectations, causing the Consumer Composite Sentiment Index (CCSI) to fall to 104.5 from 106.8 in July.

This marked the first decline in consumer sentiment in four months. The four components of household finances all decreased by one point, including the current living standards index at 92, future living standards outlook at 97, household income outlook at 100, and consumer spending outlook at 109. The biggest declines were in perceptions of economic conditions, with the Current Economic Conditions CSI falling to 79 from 84, and the Future Economic Outlook CSI dropping to 89 from 92.

The declines were attributed to the KOSPI's plunge from a record high above 9,300 to around 5,500 before fluctuating around the 6,000 level due to concerns about an AI bubble. The Current Household Savings CSI fell to 94, its lowest level since May last year, due to the decline in stock prices. Employment opportunities outlook also fell to 86, reflecting pessimistic expectations about the job market, especially among people in their 40s and younger.

Housing market expectations eased slightly, with the Housing Price Outlook CSI falling to 125 after rising since April. Inflation expectations remained at 2.7%, and the Interest Rate Level Outlook CSI fell to 125. The survey interviewed 2,500 households nationwide, with 2,244 responding.
