Stability AI, maker of image generator Stable Diffusion, raises $76 million in fresh funding

Stability AI, the company behind the popular image generation model Stable Diffusion, has secured an additional $76 million in Series B funding. This brings their total fundraising to $232 million. The fresh round of financing comes from a diverse group of investors, including major players in the entertainment industry like Universal Music Group, Sony Music Group, Warner Music Group, and gaming giant Electronic Arts (EA). Investment firms AMD Ventures and Pacific Alliance Ventures also participated in the funding.

Stability AI's CEO, Prem Akkaraju, emphasized the significance of this funding, stating that it serves as a validation of their vision of making generative AI accessible to all creators, musicians, and storytellers. Akkaraju joined the company in 2024. The newly acquired capital will be utilized to expand their "creative production" product suite and to bolster their professional services arm. Currently, Stability AI offers various AI models catering to AI music, video, and image generation.

Founded in 2019, Stability AI has been actively signing deals to integrate generative AI into the creative workflows of entertainment companies. They formed partnerships with Universal Music and EA in October last year and with Warner Music in November of the same year. These partnerships involve co-developing Stability's AI tools with these companies instead of merely licensing the output.

Stability AI has also had a string of successful legal victories, including a favorable ruling in a copyright lawsuit brought against them by Getty Images in the UK. However, a similar lawsuit is still ongoing in the United States. Additionally, Stability faced legal action from its co-founder, Cyrus Hodes, who alleged that he was misled by co-founder Emad Mostaque into selling his share in the company.
