St Helens legend Lomax to retire at end of season

St Helens legend Jonny Lomax has announced his retirement at the end of the Super League season. The 35-year-old, who has not played since fracturing his jaw in a June defeat to Warrington Wolves, has made 388 appearances for the club, securing five Grand Finals, one Challenge Cup, and a World Club Challenge title. Lomax, who has represented both Great Britain and England, including a World Cup final appearance, expressed his gratitude for the life the game has given him in a statement on the club's website.

Despite facing numerous challenges, including 19 operations, including 12 knee surgeries by the age of 26, Lomax remains thankful for the opportunities he has experienced. He acknowledged the support of the fans, saying he hopes he lived up to their expectations. Saints chairman Eamonn McManus described Lomax as "the bravest of brave in the bravest of sports."

St Helens currently sit seventh in Super League, with three regular season games remaining. The team is trailing reigning champions Hull KR by two points, with the final game of the regular season against Hull KR set to determine their fate in the top six and their chances of securing a place in the Super League play-offs for the first time.
