Conor Murphy, formerly of Foxing, unveiled his new album Smidley in June. He had previously released "Capstone" with Lucy Dacus and "Love In Every Direction" under the name Murphy Horse. The title track, "Murphy Horse," debuted alongside them. Murphy explained that he chose the title when he realized the song encapsulated the themes he was exploring most succinctly.
He admitted feeling confused, exhausted, and aimless about the future, which led him to explore the theme of reincarnation in the album. This theme, even though tenuous and shallow, stemmed from his feelings of hopelessness about creating the art he desired in this life. Murphy posited that in the next life, he might not even comprehend the concepts of art or music.
Despite this dark outlook, "Murphy Horse" is far from a depressing listen. The track is bright, colorful, and centered around hooks and good vibes, showing a stark contrast to Foxing's emo sound.
