Saudi National Institute of Health and Sanofi establish strategic framework to strengthen Saudi Arabia’s health research capabilities

The Saudi National Institute of Health (SNIH) and pharmaceutical giant Sanofi have formalized their partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at fortifying Saudi Arabia's health research capabilities. This strategic framework is designed to explore cooperation in research, innovation, and scientific capability development, aligning with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 and the National Biotechnology Strategy.

The collaboration will tap into Sanofi's international scientific and clinical development expertise, complementing SNIH's mandate for health research. By pooling resources, the partnership seeks to bolster Saudi Arabia's research infrastructure, clinical trial readiness, research governance, and the cultivation of local scientific, clinical, and research talent.

Potential areas of cooperation encompass a wide spectrum of scientific domains, particularly those relevant to Saudi Arabia's health challenges, such as genomics and precision medicine. The parties may also investigate digital health technologies, artificial intelligence, machine learning, advanced analytics, digital biomarkers, and real-world evidence. However, any activities involving national health or genomic data will necessitate separate agreements and approval from competent Saudi authorities.

The focus on capability development includes research methodology, clinical trial conduct, regulatory science, bioethics, genomic medicine, bioinformatics, and health data science. Through this framework, the parties aspire to establish a robust local research ecosystem, fostering sustainable local expertise and enhancing collaboration among national institutions, academia, healthcare stakeholders, and the biopharmaceutical industry.

Prof. Fars Alanazi, CEO of the Saudi National Institute of Health, expressed the institute's commitment to building a globally connected and locally rooted research ecosystem. He emphasized that strengthening Saudi Arabia's health research capabilities is a cornerstone of their mandate under Saudi Vision 2030 and the National Biotechnology Strategy, with Sanofi's cooperation serving as a valuable platform for scientific knowledge exchange and empowering Saudi scientific and clinical talent.

Dr. Lama Saleh, General Manager for General Medicines in Saudi Arabia & Gulf Countries at Sanofi, highlighted the transformative potential of this partnership. She underscored Saudi Arabia's shift from being a participant in global health research to becoming a hub where globally relevant science originates. Saleh stressed that this transition requires more than financial investment; it necessitates scientific talent, strong research capabilities, and an ecosystem capable of turning discoveries into tangible health improvements within the Kingdom and contributing to global scientific progress.
