Saskatchewan braces for fallout as U.S.-Canada trade war escalates

The escalating U.S.-Canada trade war is causing concern among industries in Saskatchewan, a province already grappling with the news of breaking trade talks. Premier Scott Moe warned that the province and the North American economy should brace for rough times. The trade war has seen the imposition of 50% tariffs on $20 billion worth of goods, with Ottawa promising to implement dollar-for-dollar counter-tariffs on targeted U.S. products starting September 8.

Saskatchewan's manufacturing, forestry, and even the honey industries may face the brunt of these tariffs. Premier Moe emphasized the province's commitment to engaging on the impact of the president's tariffs and exploring counter-tariff measures to mitigate their effects on Canadian businesses and families. Meanwhile, the Saskatchewan NDP is focusing on removing American liquor from provincial stores, arguing that this could create economic pressure to be bargained over in negotiations.

While some industries producing essential goods, such as potash, oil, and uranium, are relatively safe from tariffs, many in the manufacturing sector remain vulnerable. The province plans to engage industry leaders in roundtables to devise a plan of action. However, with the trade war's future uncertain, many are unsure of the full extent of the impacts and how seriously they may be affected.
