Sammy Gyamfi distracting Ghanaians from BoG-GoldBod losses with extortion claims – Oppong Nkrumah

Ghanian Member of Parliament Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has accused GoldBod CEO Sammy Gyamfi of diverting public attention from the Bank of Ghana's (BoG) and GoldBod's significant financial losses, according to a Reuters report. In its recent report, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) revealed that scaling up the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme in 2025 resulted in losses exceeding US$1.7 billion, equivalent to 1.5% of Ghana's GDP.

Opposition figures, including the Minority Caucus, have questioned the management of the programme and accused Gyamfi of contributing to the losses. Gyamfi strongly rejected these claims, accusing Opposition Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin of being an "extortionist." However, Nkrumah described the allegations as a tactic to shift public attention away from questions of accountability in the management of Ghana's gold resources and central bank finances.

The former Information Minister urged Ghanaians to focus on transparency and accountability demands instead of being distracted by Gyamfi's claims. Afenyo-Markin has called for urgent action over the reported losses, raising concerns about the financial prudence, transparency, and value for money in the management of the country's gold resources.

Nkrumah viewed Gyamfi's response as a personal attack and criticized a pattern of targeting individuals who raise questions about accountability. Opposition Leader Afenyo-Markin has now filed a lawsuit against Gyamfi, Eric Adjei, and two media organizations for the "extortionist" allegations.
