Rooted in history, MSU defense built around experienced linebackers

Michigan State's defense is built on a foundation of experience at the linebacker position, according to head coach Pat Fitzgerald. The Big Ten is known for its linebackers, and Fitzgerald aims to make Michigan State a program that thrives on that position. The linebacker trio of Jordan Hall, Caleb Wheatland, and Dion Crawford boasts a combined 3,969 career snaps and is a cornerstone of the Spartans' defense.

Hall, a two-time captain, returns from an injury with 88 tackles and is a key bridge between the past and present defensive schemes. Wheatland, a former Maryland standout, adds 101 career tackles, seven sacks, and three pass deflections, while Crawford, an Atlanta native, brings 81 career tackles and eight sacks from his time at Buffalo.

The addition of young contributors like Brady Pretzlaff and Adam Shaw, who has impressed with his physical growth and intelligence, further strengthens the depth of the linebacking corps. Fitzgerald emphasizes the importance of experience and trust in his linebackers, stating that their in-game experience will ease the tension for him and the team as a whole.
