Rescuers save eight bathers trapped on Murcia island after rescue attempt goes wrong

Emergency responders in Murcia swiftly rescued eight bathers who became trapped by strong currents on Isla del Fraile, an island off the coast of Aguilas. Two young swimmers reached the island but were unable to return due to the perilous currents, prompting six others to try and assist. This led to an emergency response on the evening of Monday, August 24, around 6:00pm, when the 112 Emergency Coordination Centre of the Region of Murcia received calls for help.

The rescue operation involved two rescue boats, six lifeguards, and a Rapid Intervention Vehicle from the Aguilas Beach Rescue Service. In addition, the Aguilas CECOPAL, or Local Emergency Coordination Centre, contributed to managing the situation. After less than a half-hour, the teams successfully returned all eight individuals back to safety, comprising the initial two swimmers and the six who had attempted to rescue them. The operation concluded at 6:27pm.

Emergency services emphasized that in such situations, individuals should not attempt rescues on their own, as it could exacerbate the danger. Instead, they advised calling 112 for professional intervention.
