Regional Urology, Nephrology centre nears opening

The East Africa Centre of Excellence in Urology and Nephrology (EACE-UN) is set to open soon, marking a significant milestone in expanding advanced kidney and urological care in Kenya. This Level 6B facility, designed to enhance healthcare accessibility, is the brainchild of Principal Secretary for Medical Services Dr Ouma Oluga.

Dr Oluga recently visited the Centre to evaluate its preparedness for delivering specialised services. The tour included a thorough inspection of various facilities, such as modular operating theatres, Intensive Care Unit, High Dependency Unit, advanced diagnostic laboratories, MRI and radiology services, a biorepository, and an integrated command centre.

The Centre also houses a renal replacement therapy unit, specifically equipped for paediatric dialysis.

Upon completion, the EACE-UN will offer specialised interventions, including dialysis and kidney transplantation, alongside supporting advanced clinical training and research. This Centre will bolster Kenya's ability to manage complex kidney and urological conditions, catering to patients from across East Africa. By bringing high-quality care closer to patients, the Centre aims to diminish the necessity of seeking specialised kidney treatment abroad and promote access to quality and affordable healthcare in line with the Government’s Universal Health Coverage initiative.

The tour was attended by Dr Oluga, Dr Martin Sirengo, the Head of the East Africa Centre of Excellence in Urology and Nephrology, and members of the EAKI project team.
