President Mahama, What Is Existential Threat?

Mr. President, when an activity is labeled as an 'existential threat', it signifies a peril so severe that it jeopardizes the very survival of the affected individuals. Illegal small-scale mining, known as galamsey, has been identified by experts as an existential threat to Ghana. Extensive research conducted by various institutions has illustrated the detrimental impact galamsey has on the nation's existence.

Globally, safeguarding sources of water is universally regarded as paramount for the survival and well-being of populations. No country, regardless of the circumstances or the parties involved, would tolerate a threat to its water supply. Yet, Ghana appears to be an exception. With 20 months having passed since Mr. Mahama assumed office, one would expect the administration to have taken decisive action against galamsey, considering its potential to annihilate the lives of Ghanaians.

Despite numerous studies and warnings from international observers, the situation has only worsened under Mr. Mahama's governance. The Ghanaian populace, numbering over 30 million, is now facing a growing existential crisis due to the rampant illegal mining activities. Mr. Mahama is faced with a choice: either prioritize the security of Ghana's water sources, forests, and farmlands or continue to allow the destruction of these vital resources by galamsey operators.

The livelihood of 4 million people, who depend on galamsey for their income, should not be the sole factor in determining the appropriate course of action. These individuals can easily transition to alternative sources of income without compromising the existence of the majority of citizens. The question remains: why is protecting these essential habitats not the administration's top priority?
