Power suppliers raise fuel charges for September

In September, power suppliers in the city will raise fuel adjustment charges for electricity bills. CLP Power will increase its charge by 45.1 cents per unit, a minor rise of 0.1 cent from the previous month. The adjustment mainly reflects changes in actual fuel prices over the past three months. To ease the impact, CLP is offering a three-month rebate of eight cents per unit to residential customers with monthly consumption under 900 units – about half of all households.

This rebate will effectively lower the fuel charge to 37.1 cents per unit, saving typical households around HK$100 over three months.

HK Electric will also raise its fuel clause charge (FCC) for September by 3.4 cents to 60.7 cents per unit. This increase follows a three-month deferred effect, reflecting fuel costs from May to July. Combined with the basic tariff, HK Electric's average net tariff for September will be 188.6 cents per unit, a 1.8 percent rise compared to August.

To support smaller households, HK Electric is providing a separate special electricity subsidy of eight cents per unit for customers using 450 units or less monthly. For these households, the net monthly bill will increase by approximately HK$15.3 after considering the subsidy and basic tariff. Fuel costs have more than doubled since geopolitical tensions began, and consumers can expect the fuel adjustment charge to remain relatively high in the coming months.
