Police to submit names of ‘unfit’ political aspirants to IEBC, Masengeli says

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is set to receive recommendations from police regarding political candidates deemed unfit to run for office. DIG Gilbert Masengeli of the police disclosed this on Tuesday, August 25, 2026. Security agencies have pledged to investigate incidents of political violence, make arrests when necessary, and implement preventive measures as Kenya prepares for the 2027 General Elections.

Masengeli cautioned politicians linked to violence against warning that they and those who organize gangs would face firm action from the police. He emphasized that the police would consult with the electoral body concerning individuals whose past actions raise doubts about their suitability for public office. Masengeli's comments come as political activities surge in the lead-up to the 2027 General Election, with concerns over violence and intimidation already surfacing around political events and recent by-elections.

The IEBC has previously penalized individuals accused of violating the Electoral Code of Conduct during campaigns. Masengeli urged political leaders and citizens to familiarize themselves with the constitutional provisions governing political participation, noting that while citizens enjoy freedoms, these rights can be limited when national security and public welfare are at risk.

He cautioned that while individuals have the freedom to act, there are limits when it comes to threats to national security and the public good. This warning follows the Interior Cabinet Secretary's directive to security agencies to take preventive action against political gangs instead of reacting to violence at rallies. The latest statement serves as a reminder to political aspirants and their supporters that past involvement in political violence may attract scrutiny before they seek elective positions.
