Paper leaks, digital burnout: Rajasthan High Court steps in to protect Gen Z, Alpha, Beta

The Rajasthan High Court has intervened to safeguard the interests of Generation Z, Generation Alpha, and Generation Beta, shedding light on the challenges they face. The court raised concerns over inadequate government school infrastructure, frequent examination leaks, excessive screen time, and over-reliance on technology, which may hinder students' reading, writing, and analytical abilities.

Justice Anoop Kumar Dhand directed the central and Rajasthan governments to submit a report and action plan to establish a comprehensive mechanism to prevent future examination leaks. The court emphasized the importance of nurturing children, as they are the future of the nation and will shape its strength, safety, and success. The court highlighted issues such as the mismatch between education and employment, digital burnout, unemployment, housing and education costs, climate anxiety, lack of youth representation, cyber safety, and the disruptive impact of artificial intelligence.

It expressed concern over the state of rural and village government schools, urging the government to address deficiencies in infrastructure, training, medical facilities, washrooms, and access to emerging technologies. The court cautioned against an exclusive dependence on technology in education, warning that such reliance could lead to the erosion of independent thought, analytical skills, and original writing abilities.

It also advocated for a balanced approach to integrating AI, digital literacy, coding, and technology-based learning while retaining traditional practices like handwritten work, reading physical books, note-making, and written examinations. Furthermore, the court addressed concerns about children's excessive screen time, referencing the World Health Organization's guidelines for physical activity, sedentary behavior, and sleep for children under five years of age.

The court instructed the Rajasthan government to limit screen time for Gen Z, Gen Alpha, and Gen Beta, requiring school canteens to display calorie counts, ingredients, and nutritional information on menu boards within eight weeks. Lastly, the court sought an action plan for addressing teacher vacancies, recruiting physical training instructors, computer teachers, and counselors, and implementing a "Digital Z-Alpha-Beta" plan to provide smart classrooms, computers, internet connectivity, and digital literacy training in rural schools.
