Ontario legislature faces calls to return amid trade war. Ford calls it ‘gutter politics’

Opposition parties in Ontario are urging Premier Doug Ford to call a special session of the legislature to debate and approve measures to alleviate the impact of a trade war with the United States. The trade conflict intensified this weekend when talks to secure a trade agreement collapsed, leading to the implementation of a 50% tariff on billions of dollars worth of Canadian goods.

President Donald Trump has threatened additional punitive measures, prompting Canada to retaliate with a "dollar-for-dollar" response. Ford defended his decision not to recall the legislature, labeling calls for a special session as "gutter politics." Opponents argue that politicians should be back in the chamber to discuss the best course of action.

Ontario NDP Leader Marit Stiles criticized Ford and his government, urging them to take decisive action to protect workers and businesses from the effects of the tariffs. Stiles proposed a range of measures, including cancelling contracts with U.S. businesses, prohibiting data centers linked to U.S. companies, and prioritizing made-in-Ontario vehicles for the provincial fleet.

Ford, however, dismissed the opposition's calls, suggesting they should reach out to him directly with their suggestions. He argued that the legislature has a function and should be utilized, stating that the bare minimum is not sufficient. The legislature was originally scheduled to reconvene after Labour Day, but the government delayed the return until late October.
