Nvidia Senior Manager Caught Smuggling AI Servers to China

Taiwanese authorities have indicted nine individuals, including a senior Nvidia manager and two Supermicro employees, for allegedly smuggling high-performance AI servers to China. Prosecutors in Keelung charged the suspects with offenses like breach of trust and document forgery. The investigation follows a related US case where Supermicro executives were charged in March for allegedly routing US AI technology through Taiwan and other Southeast Asian countries before delivering it to China.

The scheme involved falsifying documents to conceal the export of 130 Nvidia B300 AI servers, of which 74 were actually shipped to Chinese customers, while 56 remained unshipped due to customs anomalies. The servers are believed to have traveled through Indonesia, Japan, and Hong Kong before the attempted delivery. Taiwanese prosecutors claim the employees were aware of Nvidia and Supermicro's strict controls to comply with advanced technology export restrictions.

The case is part of a broader US effort to prevent the export of advanced AI chips to China since 2022, when the US began requiring licenses for such hardware. Supermicro has stated it is cooperating with Taiwanese authorities and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting its technology and complying with export-control regulations.
