NAICOM Expresses Commitment to Unlocking Takaful Insurance Potential in Nigeria

The National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) in Nigeria is dedicated to unlocking the significant potential of Takaful, a strategic tool for expanding insurance coverage, fostering financial inclusion, and driving sustainable economic growth across the country. Commissioner Olusegun Ayo Omosehin made this commitment during a meeting with a delegation of experts from the Islamic Financial Services Board (IFSB), following a successful Diagnostic Assessment Mission on Nigeria’s Takaful sector.

The IFSB-led delegation, headed by Dr. Hamim Syahrum Ahmad Mokhtar, briefed the commission on their mission's early results, which spanned a five-day engagement with crucial stakeholders such as regulators, Takaful operators, industry associations, and development partners. Omosehin emphasized that Takaful represents an alternative insurance model, distinct from conventional insurance, and possesses the capacity to cater to a wide range of consumers while adhering to Shariah governance principles.

To bolster the Takaful sector, Omosehin stressed the necessity of improving risk-based capital and supervisory structures, increasing data transparency, and implementing prudent surplus management practices that safeguard participants while ensuring the sector's sustainable growth. The mission's preliminary findings suggest several measures aimed at fortifying Nigeria's legal, regulatory, and supervisory framework for Takaful.

NAICOM views its partnership with the IFSB as a milestone in establishing a robust and resilient Takaful ecosystem in Nigeria. This collaboration is anticipated to contribute to financial stability, heightened consumer confidence, stronger policyholder protection, and responsible innovation within the Nigerian insurance industry. The commission announced that a comprehensive report on the Diagnostic Assessment Mission would be published following the final review process and the incorporation of stakeholder feedback.
