Mumbai’s Carter Road Promenade Hoardings Tender Put On Hold Over CRZ Permission; BMC Asked To Frame Common Waterfront Policy

Mumbai's Carter Road promenade LED hoarding project has been temporarily halted due to a lack of approval for commercial hoardings in the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) region. This decision was made by Mumbai Suburban Guardian Minister Ashish Shelar, who was concerned about the absence of this necessary permission from the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority.

The tender was part of a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) initiative. At a meeting with senior officials from the BMC, MSRDC, and MMB, Shelar emphasized the need for a unified policy for all Mumbai promenades. He directed the BMC to draft Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to set common rules and standards for waterfront management, taking into account citizen input.

Shelar's intervention came after residents expressed worries about commercialization affecting the environment and inconveniencing locals. The Carter Road hoarding project will remain on hold until the required permissions and a comprehensive policy framework are established. While some residents like Furkan Shaikh welcomed the halt, they stressed the need for a complete cancellation of the proposed hoardings and preservation of Carter Road as a public space. Shaikh also called for genuine public involvement in creating the new guidelines for such projects.
