MND Local: Is the tourism outlook in Los Cabos improving?

Mexico's tourism industry faced a challenging spring, with international air arrivals declining nationwide. However, outside of host cities, traditional beach destinations like Los Cabos saw a significant drop in high-value tourism. In June alone, international arrivals fell by 16.6%, marking a troubling trend for the first half of the year.

Despite this, there are signs of improvement in Los Cabos. Domestic tourism, which has been declining for 10 consecutive months, began to show positive signs in May and continued to increase in July. Moreover, domestic air bookings are expected to increase by 5.4% in the next six months, indicating a potential return to form for a market that traditionally accounts for over one-third of Los Cabos' tourists.

Cruise ship tourism, another significant contributor to the local economy, is also on the rise. Passenger numbers have increased by 64.5% compared to 2025, with 789,919 passengers arriving through June 2026, surpassing the one million mark for the first time.

To mitigate the impact of canceled air routes due to rising jet fuel costs and declining demand, new flights have been added this summer. Southwest has added nonstop flights from Las Vegas and Volaris has introduced a domestic route connecting Puebla to Los Cabos. These additions, along with the rising cruise ship tourism, suggest a glimmer of hope for Los Cabos' tourism outlook in 2026.
